Deep Dive: Inside the Opening of Los Angeles' newest Consumption Lounge

Cannabis consumption lounges are going from a long-held pipe dream to reality, and in LA, there are now two options for cannabis fans to enjoy consuming with others in a great environment.

The first, The Original Cannabis Cafe by Lowell Farms, was the first licenses cannabis restaurant in the US, and it is now joined by The Artist Tree Studio Lounge in West Hollywood, which brings an airy, modern approach to the cannabis consumption lounge idea.

Three highlights from the article are below:

1: Enjoying The Full Cannabis Experience

The Artist Tree Studio Lounge sits on top of the dispensary of the same name. Customers can choose to smoke cannabis on the second floor, which features advanced ionization air-filtration systems keep the smoke at a minimum, or avoid smoke altogether on the top floor to consume edibles.

These cannabis items can be ordered from the dispensary downstairs from a tablet with a live menu, and customers can bring their favorite pipes or papers, and if in need of assistance, visitors can rent a vaporizer or bong to take any cannabis experience a step further.

While alcohol is prohibited, restaurant partner Kitchen 24 will deliver shakes, sandwiches, burritos, and virgin margaritas and mules to enhance the cannabis experience.

2: Clearing the Requirements for Licensure

The Artist Tree is a rare business for the city, let alone the country, having secured every license possible from West Hollywood officials. That includes on-site consumption, medical and adult-use retail, and delivery. For comparison, the Original Cannabis Cafe is a consumption lounge and dispensary only.

The Artist Tree is only one of sixteen total cannabis consumption lounges scheduled to open in West Hollywood in the coming years. Though the Original Cannabis Cafe plans to reopen later this year, this “Emerald Village” of cannabis lounges is part of West Hollywood’s long-term strategy to embrace the cannabis industry. Undoubtedly, they’re loving the tax revenue too, while providing consumers with a legal place to enjoy cannabis.

3: The Art Of The Environment

The aesthetic of the Artist Tree is a departure from traditional cannabis motifs. It is filled with books lining a deep blue bookcase near the host stand. Seating is either on the plush and plant-lined patio, but the breezy interior feels very much like an al fresco area with a massive sliding door. Overall, this looks to be an elevated experience that is welcoming to anyone with a curious mind.

The Artist Tree is another big leap for the future of cannabis consumption lounges. As more and more of these environments navigate the complex licensing required to open while delivering unique experiences, the cannabis industry could see a new wave of businesses that bring cannabis use even more into the open.
